We are constantly bombarded by stimuli. The television or radio is always on, we are surfing the internet and are on our phones. There is so much going on that it is easy to get overwhelmed and lost. We can lose focus and become distracted from our goals.

The martial arts can offer us the opportunity to center ourselves and find the peace we need to be our best. We need to find the proper environment to get the most out of it. It can be hard to find this peace in class with an instructor teaching and students all around. The opportunity to center ourselves can most easily be found in silence which most times comes with solitude.

Drilling or performing kata by yourself in a quiet area can help you clear your head and center yourself. The silence allows your mind to empty and to remove all distractions. Letting the techniques flow through you in silence can be very relaxing and help you focus. You will find you have less mental stress and better ideas when you take the time to center yourself.

Using your martial arts as a centering tool will not only improve your martial arts, it will make you better able to succeed in your other ventures.

Unplug from all of the noise. Turn off the TV, put down your phone and perform your martial arts techniques in solitude and silence. You will find that you are more relaxed after and will be better able to focus on the things that are important to you.
